Race #10: The Rock N Run 5K, Augusta, Georgia
The Cause: A nonprofit organization, When Help Can’t Wait, dedicated to helping nursing home residents with basic needs such as clothing in the Augusta, Georgia area. The organization generally helps the elderly living at or below the poverty level who do not have family members. What a meaningful mission!
So… I am visiting one of my daughters in Georgia this week, and as luck would have it, I stumbled upon a 5K happening where her college soccer team is playing in their conference tournament, Augusta.
It seems like a culture clash, that there’s an elderly population in need within a city like Augusta, home to what’s considered the most exclusive golf club, Augusta National, which hosts “The Masters” every spring. Even among affluence, there are people in need.
The race was held in a beautiful location, the Augusta Canal Historic Trail starting at the Lake Olmstead trailhead. Despite drizzling rain, it was picturesque! And probably due to the rain, it was a small race.
Maybe it was the scenery, or change in climate being in the south, but… I was super excited to break my 5K PR for the first time in three years, and by almost a minute. My finish earned me a first-place medal in my 50-59 year-old age group–a fun souvenir! The race was so small that I was actually the 4th place female finisher. That may never happen again, LOL.
Even though it was a small race, I have a feeling the race proceeds will make a big impact upon the lives of area elderly in need. I spoke with the nonprofit’s executive director Brandi and she explained that the organization was founded by a woman who saw the need. And isn’t that the perfect example of how one person can indeed make a difference in the lives of others? Talk about inspiration. 🙂
My pastor recently said there are 2,000 Bible verses that instruct us to protect the poor and oppressed… There is no other subject addressed so often in the entire Bible.
For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.Deuteronomy 15:11
